The one thing I love baking every fall is sweet potato bread, which is actually a loaf cake of sorts. But it is delicious and moist with a soft texture and a little spiced. Also, it’s one of the easiest bread recipes.
Every fall, people all around me make pumpkin spice baked goods. And I’m all about that, but I prefer using sweet potatoes when baking.
You can even make this bread from cooked or leftover mashed sweet potatoes. The best part about using sweet potatoes is that they have a subtle sweetness to them that makes the bread richer in flavor.
Using sweet potatoes for making bread makes for a much denser and moisture-balanced bread that you can’t get enough of. And I’m about to share this delicious recipe with you!

Ingredients for Sweet Potato Bread
- All-Purpose Flour: You’re making bread, which means you’ll need some kind of flour. I find using all-purpose flour gives the best results. But if you’re allergic or want a vegan alternative, you can always use almond flour. Just make sure you measure the flour correctly and sift it thoroughly before adding the other dry ingredients.
- Sweet Potatoes: Before adding the sweet potatoes to the batter, you need to steam, boil, or bake them to make them soft and then mash them. You will have to peel off the skin ahead of time. If you’re in a hurry, you can also use canned sweet potatoes.
- Baking Soda: Your bread will thank you for using a little bit of baking soda. It helps give the bread the fluff it needs.
- Salt: Every dessert-type baked good and quick bread recipe needs a little salt to balance the sweetness. Just don’t overdo it.
- Cinnamon: Using a bit of cinnamon will give your bread that subtle spiced flavor that kicks in the back.
- Nutmeg: Adding another spice like nutmeg will give your spiced sweet potato bread a rich, nutty flavor.
- Unsalted Butter: I like using butter in this moist, sweet potato bread. And using unsalted butter gives you more control over the amount of salt you want in this breakfast bread. You can also use olive oil or vegetable oil instead.
- White Sugar and Brown Sugar: I like using both white sugar and brown sugar in this recipe to give it the sweetness it needs.
- Eggs: You will have to use 2 large eggs in this recipe. Just make sure you keep the eggs at room temperature when using them.
- Milk: If you want your sweet potato loaf to have the desired moisture and creaminess, you need to use milk.
- Vanilla Essence: Adding a bit of vanilla essence to the bread batter will give it a richer flavor.
- Walnuts: I like adding toasted walnuts in this recipe, but you can go with other nuts, like pecans.

Tips for Perfect Sweet Potato Bread
- You need to measure all your dry ingredients properly and add the correct ratio to make sure your bread doesn’t turn out dense.
- Adding milk to your bread batter can help give your naturally sweet bread the moisture it needs. Meaning, you will end up with soft and moist cake-like bread. If you want to, you can also add a little oil to make the bread more moist.
- I use a 9×5-inch loaf pan to bake this bread, which is the best loaf pan size, in my opinion.
- You can measure your sweet potatoes by weight or volume. Just make sure the ratio is right for the perfect amount of potatoes.
- Place your loaf pan in the center of your oven to get that even baking. And if you’re making multiple loaves together, make sure there’s enough space between the two pans.
Variations to Try
- Chocolate Chip Sweet Potato Bread: If you’re a chocolate lover, there’s nothing stopping you from adding a bunch of chocolate chips into the batter or a chocolatey version of this bread.
- Nut-Filled Version: If you want more nuts, you can always add different kinds like pecans, walnuts, almonds, etc.
- Maple or Honey-Sweetened Version: Adding honey or maple syrup will make the bread much sweeter and tastier.
- Dairy-Free or Gluten-Free Adaptation: Instead of milk and butter, you can use olive oil or vegetable oil for a dairy-free version. And you can make the bread gluten-free by using almond flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Spiced Fall Version: You can make a spiced fall baking recipe by using more ground cinnamon.
How To Serve
- When you bake this bread loaf, you can try it warm after cooling it down a little bit, or let it completely cool down at room temperature before serving.
- You can use all kinds of spreads or toppings on this bread, like butter, honey, maple syrup, or chocolate syrup.
- The best beverages to pair with this sweet bread are tea or coffee. You can enjoy this bread on a cold morning, sipping on your hot beverage.
- This bread is not only great for breakfast, but you can also serve it for brunch or as a snack.

Storage, Reheating & Make-Ahead Tips
- You can actually store your leftover bread at room temperature for up to 5 days, as long as you keep it wrapped in foil or plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container. You can also refrigerate it for up to 7 days.
- If you keep the bread covered and airtight, it can stay moist for up to 3 to 4 days without getting too dry.
- You can also freeze this bread loaf, but you need to cut it into slices. Just place one slice on top of another with a parchment paper in between and seal the whole thing in a freezer-safe airtight container.
- When you want to serve your frozen bread, just put it in the refrigerator to thaw overnight. Then, you can bake or microwave the slices wrapped in damp paper towels to make them just as moist as you first baked them.
