What You’ll Need: Ingredients
I keep saying that the ingredients are basic and simple, and you’re about to understand what I’m talking about.
- Flour: You can use regular all-purpose flour to create this quick cinnamon snack.
- Baking Powder: Adding a bit of baking powder gets you that soft and light texture you want in your fluffy cinnamon muffins.
- Sugar: Obviously, you want your muffins to be sweet!
- Salt: It balances out the sweetness.
- Nutmeg: Adding nutmeg brings a sweet and nutty flavor to the muffins, which complements the cinnamon.
- Eggs and Milk: Your eggs should be room temperature, and the milk you use should be a little warm for best results.
- Unsalted Butter: You can use salted butter, but using unsalted butter helps you control how much salt you add.
- Cinnamon Sugar: Topping off the spiced muffins with cinnamon sugar is going to be your secret weapon.

Substitute options for the cinnamon muffin recipe:
- Nutmeg: You can use cinnamon instead of nutmeg if that’s what you prefer.
- Salted Butter: If you use salted butter, you have to make sure you don’t add too much salt when mixing or skip the salt.
- Sugar: You can use honey instead of sugar if you want to go for a healthier version.
- Buttermilk: If you want your muffins to have an extra level of moistness, you can use buttermilk instead of milk.
- Oil: You can always add a little oil instead of melted butter.
Cinnamon Sugar Toppings
As I’ve mentioned, using cinnamon sugar as a topping is the secret weapon you need to make these warm, spiced muffins buttery and crunchy.
All you need for this is ⅓ cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 4 tablespoons of melted butter.
- Prepping: Add the granulated sugar to the ground cinnamon in a bowl and mix them well. Now, melt the unsalted butter on the stove or in the microwave.
- Topping: You need to let the muffins cool a little before you do this. Just take each of the muffins and dip them in the melted butter. Then, dip each of them in the cinnamon sugar and roll to cover all the surface.
Coating the entire muffin in cinnamon sugar topping gives you that extra crunchy texture for your first bite.

Make-Ahead and Storage Options
These muffins are actually freezer-friendly muffins and you can easily store them for a couple of days. So, you can bake a ton of them and warm them up for breakfast later.
Make-Ahead:
You can make the batter ahead of time and put it in the oven whenever you are ready to serve.
Storage:
These muffins don’t need to be stored in the fridge. You can just leave them at room temperature for about 5 days. Just make sure you put them in an airtight container before storing them, and place a paper towel under the muffins.
Freezing:
Now, if you make a big batch of muffins and want to store them for a couple of months, you will have to freeze them. For this, I suggest you let them cool when they come out of the oven and place them in a baking tray in the freezer for at least an hour.
Then, you should take out the frozen muffins and put them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bags. This way, you can actually freeze them for about 3 months. When you want to eat, just thaw them at room temperature and put them in the microwave for around 30 seconds to warm them up.

Common Mistakes & Troubleshooting
Dry Muffins:
If your muffins come out dry, it could mean that you overcooked them. You have to make sure you mix the dry and wet ingredients well so that there aren’t any lumps or clumps of flour in the batter.
Too Moist:
If you let the muffins sit overnight without properly storing them, the sugar from the topping will draw in moisture and turn the muffins sticky and too moist. That is why you need to put down a paper towel in an airtight container before placing the muffins in it.
Flat Muffins:
To make the muffins nice and puffy, you have to make sure you melt the butter properly before adding it to the batter. When you start baking, you can set the temperature high for a couple of minutes so that the muffins puff up nicely, then lower the temperature to let them cook thoroughly.
