The variant we will be making in the recipe is without any white pizza dough and using thinly sliced potatoes to make the pizza base itself. There are many other variants of pizza with potatoes where you can use potatoes as a topping but will cover them in another recipe.

Of course, you can choose any toppings of your choice and switch up the spices keeping the main recipe intact. Here I made the pizza in a pan but you can certainly make it in an oven if you want to.

The History and Popularity of Potato Pizza

Pizza has long been a favorite in many cultures, and its varieties have expanded beyond the traditional choices. Pizza with potatoes? although lesser known to some, has gained popularity in recent years. Initially created and enjoyed in Italy, it has made its way to the tables of pizza enthusiasts worldwide.

The uniqueness of this pizza lies in its combination of soft, thinly sliced potatoes which are made into a crispy and flavorful pizza crust.

Ingredients for a Perfect Potato Pizza

Before we start this simple recipe, let’s make sure we have all the essential ingredients to make this recipe.

1. Potatoes (oh yes!): The Star of the Dish

Potatoes are the highlight of this recipe. Opt for waxy potato varieties, such as Yukon Gold, red potatoes, or fingerling potatoes. These varieties hold their shape well during cooking and deliver an earthy flavor that complements the other ingredients. But keep in mind we will be making the dough itself with the potatoes NOT as a toppings so we need a little bit more potatoes.

2. Cheese: The Creamy Indulgence

Mozzarella cheese is the perfect companion for this potato crust pizza, adding a creamy and stringy element. However, feel free to explore other cheese options such as Fontina, Gruyère, or even Blue cheese for a bolder taste.

3. Toppings: Enhancing the Visual Appeal

Additional toppings can elevate your potato crust pizza to new heights. Some popular choices include fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme and bell pepper, onion. Get creative and add your favorite ingredients to the list.

Now that we have all the ingredients gathered, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and dive into the preparation process. Follow these step-by-step instructions to create a delectable potato crust pizza masterpiece.

Variations and Creative Twists

While the classic potato crust pizza recipe is undeniably delicious, there’s always room for experimentation and personalization. Here are a few variations and creative twists you can try:

1. Potato just as a topping

It is also possible just to use potatoes as toppings only and use a traditional pizza base. But in this case, you might need to bake the potato slices before adding them to the pizza.

2. Vegan Option

For our vegan friends, fear not! You can still indulge in the delightful flavors of potato crust pizza. Replace the traditional cheese with a vegan-friendly alternative, such as cashew cheese or vegan mozzarella. Topped with roasted vegetables, such as bell peppers, onions, and zucchini for added goodness.

3. Mediterranean vibe

Give your pizza a Mediterranean twist by adding ingredients like olives, feta cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes. Drizzle it with some extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle fresh basil leaves, and transport yourself to the sunny Mediterranean coast.

Instructions

  • Firstly, wash and peel 3 medium-sized potatoes, if desired. Using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer, slice the potatoes thinly and evenly. You can also use a mandoline if you want to. This ensures even cooking and a harmonious flavor distribution, then wash them once in the water and squeeze the water out thoroughly.
  • Then add salt, pepper, cumin powder, chaat masala powder, garlic ginger paste, eggs, and cheese to the grated potatoes and mix everything well.
  • Place the potato mixture on a pizza tray lined with a baking sheet and press out to form a circle.
  • Now preheat the oven to 350°F / 180°C and bake for between 20 and 25 minutes until the crust is crispy without the toppings.
  • Once done remove the baked crust, add the pizza sauce and toppings we mentioned above or any of your choice. Place the ready-to-bake pizza back into the oven for another 10 minutes until the cheese has melted.
  • To make this pizza in a pan place a 28cm non-stick pan on the stove on medium-low heat and add 1.5 tbsp vegetable oil.
  • Once the oil is heated add the potato mixture to the pan and spread it evenly.
  • Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until set.
  • Now flip it over and cook the other side for 5 minutes with no lid (this makes both sides a little crispy)
  • Now flip it again and add all the toppings without the basil leaves (here you can use any toppings of your choice).
  • Cover and cook for 10 more minutes or until the cheese melts.
  • Finally, add the basil leaves and your potato crust pizza is ready to serve.
